Here's What to Do When Your Furnace Won't Ignite

February 23, 2017

We are getting through the last several weeks of winter but we still need our furnaces, especially during frigid nights. Nothing is worse than going to bed at night and realizing your furnace won’t start up. If you find yourself in this situation, here are a few things you can check yourself prior to calling Peitz Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning.

Check Air Filters

You should swap out standard air filters each month. If you fail to do so, they can get clogged, restricting air flow and resulting in a furnace malfunction.

Check Your Thermostat

Start by turning the thermostat up a few degrees to get the furnace to turn on. If the true room temperature is higher than the thermostat, the furnace won’t run. Also, confirm the system switch is on “heat” or “auto.”

Check the Power

It may seem ridiculous, but verify the power switch next to the furnace is “On.” Even gas heating equipment uses electricity so confirm the breaker has not tripped and that the power switch wasn’t accidently switched to the “Off” position.

If you inspect all these things and your furnace will still not turn on, give Peitz Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning a call at 605-223-0307 and we’ll come out and take care of you as soon as possible.
