How a Pressure Switch Works

This part plays a critical role as your furnace prepares to heat your space.

Here’s what goes on after your thermostat’s call for heat:

  • Your furnace’s control board begins running the draft inducer blower motor. This exhausts combustion gases from the heat exchanger and moves in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
  • When the pressure switch senses that plenty of air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and signals the control board to ignite the furnace.
  • Your furnace ignites and provides heat.

What Happens When a Pressure Switch Fails

When your pressure switch isn’t functioning the way it should, you’ll likely hear the fan going and the switch clicking a few times before the furnace turns off completely. When a part isn’t performing right, your furnace will turn off for your safety.

Your furnace will tell you something is amiss with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to exhibit error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.

You may note fast flashes or an alternating slow flash as it transmits a fault code.
