The Joseph Groh Foundation is a great organization that provides financial support to those in the construction trade who are living with life-altering injuries. Each year the Foundation honors numerous recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was thrilled to introduce Adil Karamally as a recipient.
Adil, raised in Pakistan, obtained his MBA from the University of Chicago and afterwards acquired ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and earned his HVAC and general contracting license. Three years ago, Adil experienced a severe stroke at the young age of 48. He lost the function of his left arm and the experience left his left leg greatly impaired, resulting in foot drop. Due to the fact he had to use a heavy brace to walk, his muscles began to deteriorate and his doctors worried that he would most likely become restricted to a wheelchair.
Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their only source of income, resulting in financial strain on the couple with three children in college and one in elementary school. They became optimistic when Adil was introduced to the WalkAid System, a device that uses functional electrical stimulation to help people with foot drop walk again. But when they learned of the cost, Adil and Laila realized they would not be able to afford the WalkAid System in addition to the comprehensive rehab that Adil would need so he could figure out how to use it.
Thankfully, an employee at WalkAid referred Adil and Laila to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the incredible grant, Adil obtained the WalkAid System and has seen great success. His muscle is starting to regenerate and not atrophy, bringing positive thoughts back to Adil and Laila.
