What Are the Warning Signs of a Carbon Monoxide Leak?

Carbon monoxide (CO) is referred to as the “silent killer” for a reason. It’s invisible, odorless and hard to notice without the right tools. If it accumulates in your home, it can quickly become a danger for you and your family. So, how do you guard against something you can’t really notice naturally?

The key is to use carbon monoxide detectors. These safety devices are the initial line of defense, notifying you of the presence of CO gas before the situation becomes life-threatening. But besides a detector going off, how can you recognize if there’s a carbon monoxide leak in your home? Here are 10 clues to keep an eye on.

1. Condensation on Windows Nearby Appliances

If you spot lots of condensation on your windows, namely near a fuel-burning appliance like a gas fireplace, this could mean that there’s an issue with ventilation. While condensation by itself may not mean CO, this still should be checked out.

2. Yellow or Brown Stains

Combustion-based appliances should have clear exhaust. If you see brownish-yellow or dark stains around a heater or gas fireplace, combustion isn’t happening as it should. This can signal a carbon monoxide issue.

3. Exhaust Fumes Are in the House

If you can smell or see exhaust fumes indoors, you are at risk of carbon monoxide leaks. Fuel-burning appliances like cars, charcoal grills and generators should only be operated outside to avoid the buildup of exhaust fumes indoors.

4. Soot in or Around Your Fireplace

Your chimney should channel smoke and other gases up through and out the chimney. Finding soot inside or around the fireplace is cause for concern, especially if there’s excessive amounts. A blocked chimney vent could be the culprit for why carbon monoxide is coming back into your home.

5. Weaker or No Draft from the Chimney

Staying on the topic of chimneys, a properly working one should have the solid updrafts to fully remove smoke and other fumes. If you notice reduced ventilation or even no draft at all, your chimney may be clogged, pushing carbon monoxide back into your home.

6. Yellowish or Flickering Flames

All appliances that use gas should have a distinct blue flame. When the flame is yellow or flickering (and you don’t have a decorative gas fireplace), it means the gas isn’t burning properly and may be releasing carbon monoxide.

7. Solid Fuel Fires Burn More Slowly

When your wood- or coal-fired stove begins struggling to burn all the way through or has trouble even staying on, it could have a problem with airflow, increasing the risk of CO buildup.

Signs You May Have CO Poisoning

If you don’t catch the initial warning signs of a carbon monoxide leak in time, the next one might come from your body. Symptoms of CO poisoning may involve:

  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Shortness of breath
  • Confusion
  • And fatigue

If you or anyone in your household suddenly feels sick, especially alongside any of the warning signs listed above, move outdoors immediately and contact emergency services.

Prevention and Safety Tips

Taking all the proper precautions is key, especially in the case of CO gas exposure. For the most basic safety, check that there are carbon monoxide detectors in appropriate places. Building codes require them outside every bedroom, on each level of your home and in rooms with fuel-burning appliances. For an additional safety measure, it’s smart to install interconnected detectors so that when one detects carbon monoxide, all of them will alarm you as well. Perform monthly testing and change them when required, usually every five to seven years.

Besides installing and maintaining carbon monoxide detectors, don’t forget these other tips:

  • Work with local Experts to regularly inspect your heating system, fireplace and any other fuel-burning appliances.
  • Don’t allow anyone to use grills, portable generators or similar equipment inside, especially in small spaces.
  • Run the kitchen exhaust fan if you’re cooking with a gas-fired oven or stove, and never use these appliances to try and heat your home.
